Katerina Stein grew up in Prague and Germany. She studied at the University of Frankfurt/Main before moving to Scotland to teach at the University of Edinburgh. She attained a PhD in Literature there but went on to study Law and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with the Diploma in Legal Practice in 2007.
Katerina undertook a two-year litigation traineeship in Personal Injury Litigation and Employment Law. Upon qualifying, Katerina worked as a Procurator Fiscal Depute for the Crown Office. Prior to commencing devilling, Katerina worked in the area of Immigration Law and tutored Criminal Law and the Law of Evidence at the University of Edinburgh.
Since her admission to the Faculty in 2013, Katerina has been frequently instructed to appear in both the Inner and Outer Houses of the Court of Session, and in the First-tier and the Upper Tribunals. Katerina's practice has focussed on Immigration Law and Human Rights. She has extensive experience in that field and can draw on her outstanding research skills. She has a particular interest in European Law. December 2017 Katerina spent in Greece as part of the "European Lawyers in Lesvos Project" under the auspices of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe, and the German Bar Association, advising Asylum seekers in the refugee camp in Moria.
In addition, Katerina has held a number of academic appointments and tutors in Public Law and Individual Rights on the LLB law degree at the University of Edinburgh.
Fluent to the standard of native speaker in English, German and Czech and has a working knowledge of French and Spanish.
